Hospice
care is all about teamwork. The hospice team includes doctors, nurse,
nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains and volunteers. Twice
each year Joseph Richey Hospice offers a free 16-hour course on
becoming a hospice volunteer, usually in the Spring and the Fall.
After training a hospice volunteer may work either at home or at the
hospice facility. Hospice volunteers assist with patient care, feeding,
reading and companionship. |

Other volunteers help with the
laundry, the library, the kitchen and the gardens. Some volunteers help
as chaplains or with fund raising and office tasks. Others help us get
ready for parties and celebrations.
Joseph Richey has over 70 active volunteers and 31
volunteer physicians. We are proud of the work done by our volunteers.
They are the very heart of hospice! Below you will find information
about our volunteer doctors and personal reflections from several of
our active volunteers. Each year volunteers at Joseph Richey contribute
over 4000 hours of their time!

physicians bring a wealth of specialized knowledge to our freestanding
program. Our volunteer doctors help us solve tough problems.
Dr. John Payne organizes and coordinates this program. Dr Payne has
served as CO-Medical Director of Joseph Richey since 1987.
In 2001 Dr. Betty Tso joined Dr. Payne as CO-Medical Director. Both Dr.
Payne and Dr. Tso visit regularly with Joseph Richey patients and
confer with their fellow physicians and nursing staff regarding patient
care.
The dedication and knowledge of our volunteer doctors is a wonderful
gift to our patients. We are grateful to all the doctors who have given
so freely of their time to make hospice care the best it can be, and
especially grateful to Dr. Payne and Dr. Tso! |

Reflections from JRH Volunteers
"A warm and wise woman introduced me to the idea of hospice and the
care of hospice patients many years ago. She taught by example and
reflection. A memorable observation of hers was that true caring is
reciprocal.

I
think of that each time I finish my morning at Joseph Richey and look
back on the encounters, activities and lessons of my few hours there.
It is a successful time if I've given as much as I've received. I try
to be useful to the patients, either directly or indirectly. Always, I
am rewarded by moments of simple connection, humor, or insight. Dying
is a time of both the routine and the exceptional. It is a time full of
humanity. I get to be part of that." - Lynn Deering
"Volunteering at the Joseph Richey Hospice has been a growing
experience for me. Starting almost involuntarily in November of 1987
because of Mother Catherine Grace's deep commitment to the hospice, it
and I have grown and changed together. My reason for volunteering was
to give thanks for the many blessings in my life. That reason has not
changed. I am still giving thanks for my blessings. (My hardships have
also been blessings, if a bit more difficult with which to deal!) We
often don't know how we affect other people. JRH has given me an
opportunity to know how I could, and can be, of help to others --
whether by listening (my husband wouldn't believe me capable of that!),
sharing my own experience with pain and loss, or just being who I am.
The last is sometimes the most surprising. I would not trade these
years of visiting. They have been a gift." - Bonye Norton |

Joseph
Richey Hospice offers opportunities for our friends to join us as
Partners in Caring. Twice each year we provide 16-hour training
sessions in hospice volunteer work. Volunteer opportunities include
patient care at Richey House and in hospice home care venues.
JRH has over 75 volunteers who help with shopping, party and holiday
planning, office tasks, pastoral care and fund raising. Recently
our volunteers played a key role in helping us raise funds for Dr. Bob's Place our hospice for
children. We are already half way toward our $1.6 million goal as a
result of their efforts.
If you are interested in volunteering please give the hospice a call at
410-523-2150 and ask to speak to our Volunteer Coordinator. |
