The mission of the
Joseph Richey Hospice was conceived by one of Maryland's hospice
pioneers, Mother Catherine Grace of the All Saints Sisters of the Poor.
Mother Catherine Grace helped found the Church Home Hospice, Maryland's
first hospice in the late 1970's. While working at Church Home Hospice
as a nurse, she noticed that each day people were turned away from care
because they lacked an able caregiver at home. |

Joseph Richey Hospice, Maryland's oldest freestanding hospice
facility is Mother Catherine Grace's answer to that need. Opened in
1987, Richey is a warm and welcoming home dedicated to the care of
terminally ill people who are alone or who have no one able to care for
them at home. Joseph Richey Hospice has 20
private rooms, beautiful public rooms and gardens, expert pain and symptom control for end stage
disease, and a 1-4 staff to patient ratio. Patients are accepted
without regard to ability to pay and without discrimination.
Each year the hospice raises money to bridge the cost of care for
patients without insurance, and for those who are under-insured for
hospice care. We provide a residential subsidy to support the cost of
24 hour nursing, and room and board, to over 80 percent of our
patients. We also provide charitable support to cover the cost of care
for our hospice home care patients who are un-insured.
Joseph Richey relies on the generosity of our friends to help us
provide care to people truly in need. Each year almost 20 percent of
Richey operating income comes from gifts and grants. These gifts help
us care for the dying who could not otherwise access hospice care. We
invite you to join us in this mission!
